We spent two weeks on a relaxed tour of the country, starting in Athens and ending on the islands. Unfortunately the template for this site doesn’t allow descriptions on images, so can’t really give detailed info about the photo, but happy to walk through it on our next visit together!
We flew into Athens and spent three days there checking out the old sites and introing ourselves to the foods and chaos of the city. Athens is massive, and we definitely only saw a portion. Our hotel was in the historic district, within walking distance to the Parthenon/Acropolis. Lots of winding, small side streets to explore and some terrific food. Checked out the Acropolis Museum with was very rad. Lots of old stuff.
After Athens, we rented a car and started a three day journey north, with stops in Delphi, Meteora, and ending in the Zagori region which is on the Albanian border. The Zagori area is mountainous and a whole lot quieter than the rest of the areas on the trip. It felt very Baltic, and was easily our favorite region of the trip. We stayed a small town, Dilofo, which has less than 20 year round residents and is filled with these old shale buildings. The building we stayed in, Archontiko Dilofo, was ran by a father and son and used to be one of the bigger houses in the town. The dining room was converted from the houses former stable.
After Zagori, we took the car back to Athens for a long 5+ hour drive. The driving in Athens was chaos, we were getting into town during high traffic, the GPS tooks us on some wild roads, it was stressful. But we survived. We hopped on a ferry to go to islands for the second half of the trip, Naxos first then Santorini.
We spent four days on Naxos, intending a day less but high winds cancelled the ferry. Naxos was very rad, we spent the days hiking, did a drive around the islands, some beach sitting, and lots of eating. We were able to get a ferry off the island to Santorini, where we spent one night and got up at 5 am to head to the airport. Unfortunately didn’t see much on Santorini, but it was absolutely packed with people and just wasn’t really our scene. We did a small hike to look over the island, then headed into the main town which was the tourist chaos of everyone sprinting to get a picture of the sunset.
The food we ate the whole trip was fantastic, the Greek salads we had at most every meal were amazing and we had the best grilled meat ever. So good, and easily a highlight of the trip.
